Iron Arrow Dues Raised:
Due to the increasing cost of running the Tribe, decreased member contributions and maintaining a high level of service, events and publications,
effective fall 1999, member dues will be $50.00 per academic year.
Iron Arrow to be featured in Miami Magazine:
In its Fall 2000 issue,
Miami
Magazine will feature an article on Iron Arrow, its tradtions, and its charge in upholding and maintaining the traditions
of the University of Miami. Also covered wll be the Tribe's role in fostering leadership on campus, and ensuring the well being of the University.
Initiation Ritual Returns to Core Values:
After much inspection, the officers found that the initiation ritual had lost much of its original intent and focus. A meeting with the Council of Elders
has helped return the initiation ritual to its focus on internal reflection and evaluation. We hope that many of you will join us this coming year for
initiation both in the spring and fall and experience this revamped initiation ritual with the new tappees.
Endowment Reaches Critical Milestone:
It is our pleasure to announce that thanks to the generosity of many members like Earl Rubley (whose last contribution put the endowment fund over the top),
we have been able to raise more than the $25,000 that we needed to complete the endowment. The efforts of Patricia Herbert and Sharon Brown have been
handsomely rewarded in reaching this milestone, and to them the Tribe is deeply appreciative. Under their leadership, we created the ÒWheel of LifeÓ to
recognize and encourage donors of $500 or more to the endowment. Our new direction is to continue to grow the endowment to increase the scholarship amount
some day.
To all who have contributed to the fund, the Tribe is extremely grateful for your generosity. These donations are considered above and beyond those made
for annual dues and, accordingly, will be duly recognized at our Tapping Luncheon this Spring. If you would like to contribute now and help us cap the fund,
please send a separate check, payable to University of Miami/Iron Arrow, with ÒIron Arrow Scholarship FundÓ clearly noted on the check. We will appreciate
any contribution for this unique and worthy cause.
Reprinting of IA Book underway:
We are continuing to address the issue of printing and distributing the third edition of Iron Arrow: A History. We are pleased to report that the
materials have been recovered from the printer who did not carry through on his commitment.
Mickey Lewis has been generous enough to volunteer to head this effort and has made significant progress. Once the cost for printing is determined,
the funding issue will need to be addressed. At the present time, we are considering having the book available on diskette and on-line in the
Portable Document Format (PDF). More information will be made available via the website regarding this issue. When available, the book will be
mailed to those members tapped after the 1999 fall semester. It is important for those members to keep us updated of their current addresses.
If any members are interested in providing direct assistance, please contact the Iron Arrow office at (305) 284-IRON, or Mickey Lewis at (305) 255-7955.
Members with printing/publishing experience or facilities would be especially helpful. If you have any questions, please call the Iron Arrow office.
Database Recompiled and Updated:
Due to the outstanding efforts of M. Heather K. Warren, the Tribe has now completed and recompiled its membership database. We implore all members to
ensure that if your address changes, or if you are not getting communicaes from the tribe (if you are paying dues and not receiveing the newsletter, or
not receiveing email notices) to please update your contact information with us via email, snail mail, fax or telephone.
